The comments of Sir Walter Scott's were clearly considered by the BBC who chose Stamford as the location for its successful costume drama "Middlemarch". Having removed the odd streetlight, road sign and a few television aerials, it was possible for the actors to be filmed walking the streets of Georgian Stamford, uninterrupted by features of our modern world.
